How it's calculated

The employee's Social Security is calculated each month on the annual gross divided by 12 (extra payments prorated), up to €5,101.20 a month: 4.70% common contingencies, 1.55% unemployment (1.60% on a temporary contract), 0.10% vocational training and 0.15% MEI; above the maximum base the solidarity contribution is added. The IRPF withholding follows the official AEAT algorithm: Social Security, €2,000 of other expenses and the employment income reduction are subtracted from the gross; the withholding scale is applied to that base minus the same scale on the personal and family allowance, and the rate is that amount divided by the gross, truncated to two decimals. Withholding is a prepayment: the final tax is settled in the annual return with the state and Catalan scales, which the tool also estimates.

What's not covered

Disability, dependent ascendants, maintenance or alimony payments, geographic mobility, pre-2013 mortgage relief, mid-year regularisations, other income (rent, savings, self-employment), joint taxation, regional tax credits and benefits in kind. Very low part-time salaries don't get the minimum contribution base.
